Brett Wood at the Pilbeam Theatre
First Time Off the Leash: The Livewire on Brett Wood at the Pilbeam Theatre

The Livewire's Brad Fry was at the Pilbeam Theatre in Rockhampton on 19 June 2025 for Brett Wood's support set on the Pete Murray tour. Rockhampton is a long way from Melbourne, and Wood arrived having already played dozens of shows on one of the most substantial national tours of his career, this time as the artist at the front of the stage.
Wood addressed the crowd with characteristic dry humour: "after 20 years, first time allowed on stage unsupervised." The line earned a laugh, but it also contained something true. Close to twenty years of building other people's shows, and now directing all of that craft and experience at his own music for the first time.
Fry's review found Wood weaving intricate melodies and delicate phrasing across a set from a catalogue described as filled with nothing but gold. That kind of response from a reviewer encountering the music fresh is exactly what a solo debut is supposed to produce.
