A Quiet Masterclass

A Quiet Masterclass: Xpress Magazine on Brett Wood at the Astor Theatre

Aleighsha Glew reviewed Brett Wood's support set at the Astor Theatre, Perth, on 31 July 2025 for Xpress Magazine. Perth was a late stop on an extended national run, and Wood, a guitarist with nineteen years of professional experience behind him alongside Pete Murray - arrived with his own set fully formed.

Glew's assessment landed on two precise words: "quiet masterclass." A quiet masterclass is a specific thing. It is not a showcase, not a statement of technical bravado, but a musician in complete command of the instrument who trusts the music to do the work. Wood has spent more than two decades learning that kind of restraint in service of other people's songs. He is now applying it to his own.

The night had a second chapter. Wood returned to the stage later in the evening, joining Pete Murray for a batch of 6 songs including "Always a Winner" and "Free" a moment that placed him back in the role he has held for close to twenty years, but with an audience who now had a reason to watch his hands.

“the kind of set that reminds you just how powerful an instrument can be in the right hands. His intricate guitar work was nuanced, his stage presence calm and assured—a quiet masterclass that felt like a deep breath before the emotional plunge of the night ahead.”
